Iranian Foreign Minister, Mohamad Javad Zarif said a war between US and his country is not expected despite the rise of tensions, yet warned of possible conflicts as “accidents can happen.”

In an interview with The Independent, Zarif gave examples of “accidents,” such as 2016 incident when Iranian Revolutionary Forces captured two US Navy boats in the Persian Gulf.

The Foreign Minister also used the example of strategic places such as Hormuz Strait and the Persian Gulf, where the two countries ‘military forces might clash.

Tensions increased between Iran and US as Washington has re-imposed oil and financial sanctions against Tehran last year, hoping to change the Islamic Republic’s regional and international behavior.

Following the sanctions, US designated Iran’s Revolutionary Guards Corps a “foreign terrorist organization.”

Iranian president, Hassan Rouhani, has frequently claimed that his government will not change its policies despite the pressures.
