US imposes new sanctions against Iran’s Supreme Leader

US President Donald Trump on Monday imposed new sanctions on Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and his office amid rising tensions between the two countries, Reuters reported.

The US President previously told reporters that the new wave of sanctions is due to Iran’s recent attack on its Navy drone, but later he claimed that these sanctions would have been imposed regardless.

Tensions have been raising once again between Washington and Tehran following six tanker attacks and downing of an American Navy drone by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGCs).

Tehran shot down an US unmanned drone, saying it entered Iran’s airspace; a claim denied by officials from Washington who explained the drone was flying over international airspace.

In respond to the drone downing, a military act against the Islamic Republic was planned by Washington, but Trump called it off minutes before it started
