Armin Nourmohammadi was arrested in 2023, after the end of the 2022 protests, along with eight others in Islamshahr.
The charge brought against these individuals was the arson of two ATMs belonging to Bank Sepah. According to the defense lawyer, the damage caused was minor, a fact that has also been officially acknowledged. However, no legal evidence or documentation has been presented to substantiate the other charges attributed to Armin Nourmohammadi.
Sharifzadeh Ardakani stated that Armin Nourmohammadi’s father reached a settlement with Bank Sepah and fully paid the declared damages, with the amount deposited into the bank’s account.
Despite this, Judge Salavati, citing Note 1 of Article 87 of the Islamic Penal Code, applied the charge of “moharebeh” (waging war against God) to Armin Nourmohammadi and issued a death sentence against him.
This comes while the other defendants in the same case have received long prison sentences, whereas Armin Nourmohammadi is the only defendant who has remained in pretrial detention since 2023.
The other defendants were released on bail, and the continuation of his detention has heightened serious concerns about discrimination in the judicial process and violations of the principles of a fair trial.
The issuance of a death sentence for Armin Nourmohammadi—despite the payment of damages, the lack of sufficient evidence for serious charges, and the clear disparity in treatment compared to other defendants—has sparked widespread legal criticism and deep concern among human rights activists.
