On July 13, Sky News reported that the United Kingdom had officially designated the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization.
The IRGC is already listed as a terrorist organization by the European Union, and Australia has also designated it as a state entity that supports terrorism. As a result, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer had recently come under increasing pressure to take similar action.
Until now, British government officials had argued that, under UK law, it was not possible to designate official state institutions such as the IRGC as terrorist organizations.
After years of pressure from both within and outside the bloc, the foreign ministers of the European Union agreed in February 2026 to add the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps to the EU's list of terrorist organizations.
