Iran on Tuesday responded to US sanctions of its Supreme Leader, called the move the “end of diplomacy” between the two countries, Reuters reported.

US President Donald Trump on Monday imposed new sanctions on Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and his office amid rising tensions between the two countries.

“Imposing useless sanctions on Iran’s Supreme Leader (Ayatollah Ali Khamenei) and the commander of Iran’s diplomacy (Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif) is the permanent closure of the path of diplomacy,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Abbas Mousavi said on Twitter.

Washington announced it will sanction Iranian Foreign Minister Mohamad Javad Zarif later this week.

Iran has frequently refused negotiation with US officials despite the American’s willingness.

Tensions have been raising once again between Washington and Tehran following six tanker attacks and downing of an American Navy drone by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGCs).
