On Saturday, June 13, U.S. President Donald Trump announced in a post on Truth Social that a new agreement with the Islamic Republic of Iran is expected to be signed on Sunday, June 14, 2026. He stated that immediately afterward, "the Strait of Hormuz will be open to everyone again."
In his message, Trump described the nuclear agreement negotiated under former President Barack Obama, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), as "an easy and smooth path to a nuclear weapon." He argued that under that deal, Iran could have obtained and used nuclear weapons years ago.
Trump characterized the proposed agreement with Tehran as "the exact opposite" of the JCPOA, saying it would serve as "a wall against nuclear weapons." He added that the Iranian government "no longer wants nuclear weapons" and insisted that Iran would not acquire such weapons through any means, including purchasing, producing, or otherwise obtaining them.
The U.S. president emphasized that, unlike what he described as the Obama administration's transfer of "hundreds of billions of dollars" to Iran, "no money will change hands" under the new agreement. He specifically referred to the $1.7 billion cash payment delivered to the Iranian government during Obama's presidency.
Trump also stated that, at an appropriate time and "when everything has calmed down," the United States would remove and destroy the "nuclear dust" — referring to enriched uranium allegedly buried deep within mountains. He attributed this capability to American B-2 bombers and their pilots, adding that the material could be transported either in Iran or the United States, where it would be diluted and destroyed.
He concluded by saying: "We look forward to working with Iran and the entire Middle East for a long time to come."
