On May 31, 2026, Iran’s vice president said that damage to the country’s gas infrastructure during the 39-day war has more than doubled Iran’s gas deficit.

Esmail Saqqab Esfahani stated that the conflict resulted in a loss of 55 billion cubic meters of gas production capacity, reducing annual output from 297 billion cubic meters to 242 billion cubic meters.

According to him, when combined with last year’s gas shortfall of 45 billion cubic meters, Iran is now facing a total gas deficit of approximately 100 billion cubic meters.

The figure is nearly equivalent to twice Turkey’s annual gas consumption. Despite holding the world’s second-largest natural gas reserves, Iran has been grappling with a severe gas shortage due to delays in developing gas projects, widespread energy waste, and insufficient investment in alternative energy sources.

Saqqab Esfahani also reported a daily gasoline shortage of 30 million liters.

Meanwhile, as Iran’s economic difficulties continue, a new resolution approved by Tehran’s City Council has significantly increased funeral-related service fees at Behesht-e Zahra Cemetery.

According to the measure, costs have risen by an average of about 40 percent, while some tariffs have increased by as much as 50 percent.
