Former US secretary of state John Kerry on Tuesday denied allegations he disclosed sensitive information about Israeli military operations to Tehran after a leaked audio recording of Iran’s foreign minister Mohamad Javad Zarif appeared to claim he had.

"I can tell you that this story and these allegations are unequivocally false. This never happened – either when I was secretary of state or since," he tweeted.

According to the leaked audio of Zarif, Kerry told him that Israel had hit Iranian targets in Syria over 200 times. Kerry was serving as the secretary of state at that time.

The accusation has led to a backlash against Kerry, who now serves as President Joe Biden's envoy for climate.
