The website of Islamic Republic Leader, Ali Khamenei on Friday posted the image of a golfer similar to former US president Donald Trump's, vowing to avenge the Killing of Qassem Soleimani, commander of Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps' Quds Force.

The image first appeared on a Persian-language twitter account reportedly linked to Khamenei. Twitter later took down the account announcing that it was fake.

Under the picture was remarks by Khamenei in December ahead of the first anniversary of killing Qassem Soleimani. Soleimani was killed by a drone strike in January 2020.

“Both the murderers and those who ordered it must know that revenge may come at any time,” read the comments, reproduced on top of the image, which showed the shadow of a drone looming over the lone golfer without naming trump.

Tension between the US and Iran have hiked since 2018 after Trump withdrew from a 2015 nuclear deal between Tehran and world powers and reimposed crippling sanctions on Tehran.

An official close to Khamenei’s told Reuters that “The aim (of the tweet) was to remind the gambler (Trump) that leaving office does not mean he will be safe and the assassination of our martyr Soleimani will be forgotten.”
