According to reports by the Karun Human Rights Organization, more than half of the inmates in Ahvaz Central Prison have suffered from diarrhea and vomiting due to food poisoning.

Sources inside the prison say that in recent weeks, authorities have been serving only chicken as the main meal, but the distributed meat had an abnormal appearance and its color was dark and brownish. According to prisoners, the chickens were likely diseased or even dead before being cooked, which has led to the mass poisoning.

Sheiban Prison, known as one of Iran’s most notorious detention centers, has long been plagued by crises of poor-quality food, unsafe drinking water, and the absence of proper medical services.

Despite housing around 4,000 inmates, the facility has only one imprisoned doctor, one administrative doctor, and a single paramedic responsible for the infirmary—an insufficiency that has now worsened the crisis in addressing the severe condition of poisoned prisoners.

Inmates had repeatedly protested against the unhygienic and inadequate food conditions in the past, but new reports indicate that the situation has reached a critical stage, posing a serious threat to the lives of thousands of prisoners.
