On Saturday, March 28, the U.S. Department of State issued a strong statement condemning the drone attack carried out by Iran-affiliated terrorist groups on the residence of Nechirvan Barzani, President of the Kurdistan Region, stating that the attacks were conducted by “terrorist militias” linked to Iran.

The statement read: “The United States strongly and unequivocally condemns the heinous terrorist attacks carried out by Iran-backed proxy militias in Iraq against the private residence of Nechirvan Barzani.”

The U.S. State Department emphasized that such actions by Iran and its proxy groups constitute “a direct attack on Iraq’s sovereignty, stability, and territorial integrity.”

On Saturday, the city of Duhok was targeted in a drone attack, and one of the drones was directed toward the residence of Nechirvan Barzani. The Kurdistan Region Presidency described the incident as “a highly dangerous development,” stating that no group should feel entitled to target the residence of the region’s president.

The U.S. State Department further added: “We strongly reject these reckless and threatening terrorist actions carried out by Iran and its proxy forces in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq and across Iraq.”

The attack has been widely condemned at domestic, regional, and international levels. Iran has denied any involvement and instead accused the United States and Israel, while the Iraqi Prime Minister has pledged a serious investigation into the incident.
