The lawyer representing Elham Zeraatpisheh, an Iranian attorney, announced that her client has been sentenced to six years in prison by a court of first instance after spending more than 50 days in detention.
Speaking to the website Emtedad, Shahla Orooji said that Zeraatpisheh was arrested on May 3 while following up on the case of one of her clients at a prosecutor's office in Fars Province and has remained in custody ever since.
According to Orooji, Zeraatpisheh was sentenced to five years' imprisonment on the charge of "assembly and collusion against national security" and one year for "propaganda against the system." Despite the completion of the investigation and the issuance of the initial verdict, the court refused to replace her pretrial detention with release on bail.
The lawyer also stated that, contrary to legal requirements, her appeal against the continued pretrial detention of her client has not yet been forwarded to the Court of Appeal for review.
