A petrochemical project in Miankaleh Peninsula in northern Iran has been continued by a team belonging to Iranian former Oil Minister Bijan Zanganeh despite calls from environmentalists and legal orders to stop the project, information received by Avatoday shows.

According to the information, Darab Vakili, a close person to Bijan Zanganeh, manages the project.

Valiki is also a member of the management board of Behshahr Industrial Company.

The Miankaleh petrochemical project was proposed by Iran’s Oil Ministry during Hassan Rouhani’s presidency, the project was approved by the government.

Environmentalists reported this week that the project is going on. Several videos of the construction have been shared on social media this week.

Environmentalists say the petrochemical site endangers the wildlife of the region including the life of a variety of birds and reptiles.

Miankaleh Peninsula was designated as an International UNESCO biosphere reserve in 1976.
