The head of the United Nations’ atomic watchdog agency on Monday asked Tehran to provide inspectors access to some sites where the state is believed to have stored forbidden nuclear material.

International Atomic Energy Agency chief Mariano Grossi said he made sure the request reached “Iranian authorities at higher levels.”

Grossi explained that for more than four months “Iran has denied us access to two locations and that, for almost a year, it has not engaged in substantive discussions to clarify our questions related to possible undeclared nuclear material and nuclear-related activities.”

Iran has frequently denied access to the sites saying that the IAEA has no legal basis to inspect the locations.

Iran signed the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, or JCPOA, with the United States, Germany, France, Britain, China and Russia.

The US withdrew from the deal in 2018, accusing Iran of violating the terms and slamming the country for its continuous sponsorship of terrorist groups in the region. The deal allows Iran only to keep a stockpile of 202.8 kilograms.
